The RPCM® Cool Vest uses Unique and Patented Phase Change Material.
The 'old style' phase change material that we used was a chemical combination of paraffinic hydrocarbons (with names like cetane, hexadecane, tetradecane, octadecane, and sometimes called things like Heat Transfer Formula or HTF,) which are created as by-products of crude oil when it is refined into things like gasoline and diesel fuel. Those chemicals worked well in cooling vests and cooling products over the years, but because they contain hazardous chemicals, it was critical that they were handled carefully and not allowed to contact the skin, mucous membranes, or bloodstream of the wearer. Further, any time one was damaged or no longer wanted, hazardous materials disposal laws apply made legal disposal difficult and expensive for our customers. These were problems that were the "nature of the beast" before our technology evolved.
We used those primitive PCM's because there wasn't anything better available. (Of course, people used to put lead in paint and gasoline as well, before we found better ways.) In 2004, the Glacier Tek Cool Vest product evolved into the only truly safe phase change cooling vest product available anywhere. Working with one of our shareholders who has a PhD. in Chemistry, we developed and patented a unique phase change material known as RPCM®, or Renewable Phase Change Material. It is bio-based and contains absolutely no hazardous chemicals and is only available through Glacier Tek under the brand name RPCM®. Every other brand of PCM cooling vest still uses the hexadecane and other hazardous chemicals and should not be considered safe in contact with your body.
